Driving Change: The Women Train Drivers Campaign with South Western Railway

Less than 1 minute Minutes

The transport industry has long been associated with gender stereotypes, but the tide is turning. Red Rocket is proud to have partnered with South Western Railway (SWR) on the groundbreaking Women Train Drivers campaign. This initiative, which has been featured on platforms like the BBC, highlights the remarkable women breaking barriers and changing perceptions in the railway industry.

Breaking Stereotypes in Rail

Train driving has traditionally been viewed as a male-dominated profession, but campaigns like SWR’s are challenging that perception. The Women Train Drivers campaign celebrates the achievements of women drivers while encouraging more women to consider a career on the railways.

SWR’s goal is to cultivate a more diverse and inclusive workforce that truly represents the communities it serves. With women making up only a small percentage of train drivers in the UK, the Drivers Campaign is a critical step toward fostering greater equality in the transport sector.

Spotlight on the Stories

At the heart of the Women Train Drivers Campaign are three inspirational women who shared their journeys into train driving. Their stories highlight the diverse paths and motivations that lead women to this career:

  1. Sally: A former bus driver, Sally’s life changed one day while stuck in traffic. Watching trains move freely over a bridge ahead, she was struck by their sense of freedom and decided to pursue a career as a train driver.
  2. Gemma: Having already worked in the rail industry, Gemma saw train driving as a natural progression. Her existing experience gave her the confidence to take on this rewarding role.
  3. Yasel: Initially believing train driving to be a masculine job, Yasel’s perspective shifted thanks to her ex-husband, who worked in the rail industry. He encouraged her to apply and believed in her potential. Yasel now credits him for pushing her toward a career she loves.

These stories, central to the Drivers Campaign, illustrate that there’s no single path to success in train driving. Each journey is unique and inspiring, offering a blueprint for other women to follow.

Our Role in the Drivers Campaign

At Red Rocket, we specialise in turning ideas into impactful campaigns, and this project was no exception. Before production began, we conducted in-depth research and conversations with the train drivers. We listened to their experiences, aspirations and what they wanted to communicate in the video. This ensured their stories were captured authentically and respectfully.

  • Creative Direction: Crafting visuals and storytelling elements that resonate with a broad audience.
  • Film and Photography: Capturing authentic, inspiring moments featuring real women train drivers.
  • Video Editing: Editing multiple video edits to suit multiple platforms and devices.
  • Graphic Design: Designing campaign materials for use across multiple platforms, including posters and social media.

This attention to detail ensured the campaign was not only inspiring but also deeply relatable to its audience.

Making Headlines

The Women Train Drivers Campaign has received widespread media coverage, including a feature on the BBC and Independent. This exposure amplified the message, sparking meaningful conversations about gender diversity in traditionally male-dominated professions.

By giving women train drivers a platform to share their stories, the Drivers Campaign has inspired countless others to consider careers they may never have thought possible.
